“A King in the Cradle”

Last time we talked about another important aspect of the Incarnation…the glory of Jesus.

Today I want to talk about Jesus’ divine nature; the fact that Jesus is God; and not only is He God but He's King. One of the great ironies of all times as it relates to Christmas, is that this Baby who was born in poverty and obscurity in Bethlehem has risen to be King of the universe.

In the Incarnation we see the deity of the Baby Jesus. He is God and He is man. On the night that He was born there was significant activity that signaled the fact that He was born to be King…..angels were singing His praises and wise men came bearing gifts for the King. Jesus is the “King in the Cradle.” I want to talk this morning from Isaiah 60 …this prophecy is partially fulfilled at the first coming of Christ the first Advent (Christmas) and will be completely fulfilled in the second coming, the second Advent and I want to point out some commonalities between the two.

Isaiah 60:1 Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. 2 For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you.

“Your light” – Isaiah says …. the Light you've been looking for. When we look at Jesus in His first coming as a Baby, Light is a big part of the story. There are hosts of angels - the glory of the Lord shining all around shepherds... the brightness of that star that leads the wise men to the Christ Child.

John calls Jesus in John 1:9, the “True Light” that comes into the world. And when He comes in His second Advent to reign on the earth; the scene will be one of glorious light.

We talked about the glory of the first advent a couple weeks ago. In that smelly cattle stall, there was a sense of wonder and amazement as shepherds came to worship the Savior, Christ the Lord… but we mentioned the fact that many missed the glory of God, they failed to see the King – Jesus, the Son of God. Their eyes were blinded, their view was obscured. They missed the glory.

But not so when Jesus returns again…the Bible says that every eye will see Him, and they will look on Him whom they have pierced. And He will set up His Kingdom, and all will know it and will worship Him.

Habakkuk 2: 14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, As the waters cover the sea.
