I'm starting a new series today called: “Walk according to the Spirit.” I feel inspired to talk about this because many accept Christ as their Savior…. they pray the sinner's prayer, they invite Jesus to come into their heart, and that seems to be the end of their spiritual journey. Its vital to understand that getting saved is just the beginning of the journey. You now have to “walk it out”, you have to live as the Bible says “according to the Spirit”. Well, what does that even mean?
It means that your spirit; and you do have a spirit within you that was made alive when you accepted Christ; is now alive towards the things of God. Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ, by grace you have been saved…
You are a spirit person; you were born that way-spirit, soul and body. There is a spirit within you that is either dead presently or was dead and has been made alive. Now, you must walk “according to the Spirit.” The word “according” is used over and over again in Romans 8 like in the first verse:
Romans 8: 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
“According” is used in the Bible in the context of following the rules… it means to be in harmony, it means to be in sync, it means that I am conforming to something. To walk “according” to the Spirit means to” get in sync, to get in harmony” with the Holy Spirit. We want our behavior, actions, speech and even our thoughts to be in harmony with the Holy Spirit… heavy emphasis on the word “Holy” - He is not called “Holy” for no reason.
You have to decide on your eternity; which road are you going to go: to walk the narrow road according to the Spirit; or the broad road of people who walk according to the flesh.
Romans 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
If you live according to the flesh you will die; you are dead spiritually while here on this earth and you'll die a second death in God’s judgement. So, you have a significant decision to make because you can live according to the flesh, that is, do what the flesh desires or you can follow the voice of the Spirit and you can live a fulfilled, satisfied life here and live forever with God.
