We are continuing the series that we have started: “Teach your Children Well,” and we want to teach them how to love God, then to practice repentance and how to honour.
Today I wanted to talk about “work” – teaching our kids the value of work. But more than just teaching your children a good work ethic, we want to teach them about the seasons of life.
Teaching them that your belief and faith in God will serve you well as you walk through the seasons of life and as you work with a good attitude, God is going to work on your behalf.
Because “all things work together for good to those who love God to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
So I want to look at the life of Joseph in the Old Testament because he is a great example of someone who had high points and some desperately low points but through it all, puts his faith in God and God delivered him out of all of his troubles. So, in this story Joseph's father Jacob, sends him on an errand. He wants to get a report of how his brothers are doing. But he has trouble finding them.
Genesis 37:15 Now a certain man found him, and there he (Joseph) was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?” 16 So he said, “I am seeking my brothers. Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks.”
The Bible says that Joseph is wandering in the field. He tells this passerby that he's seeking his brothers but you get the feeling that there's a sense of lostness. That Joseph is in a state of confusion: spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and maybe even physically. He's 17 years old, he's not a man yet but he's certainly not a boy. He realizes that he has a “calling” of God on his life, but he wonders how it will all come to pass. It reminds me of a Michael W Smith song: “A Place in this World.”
“The wind is moving but I am standing still, A life of pages waiting to be filled, A heart that's hopeful, A head that's full of dreams, But this becoming is harder than it seems, Feels like…I'm looking for a reason roaming through the night to find My place in this world, My place in this world” ….
There's a future that lies before us and we may not know where we fit in the present, and our heart is full of many aspirations and desires, but there is a “calling” underneath it all; a destiny, a purpose and a dream that needs to be realized. And God is working on our behalf.
