In this series entitled “What Happens Next?”, I have examined a number of end time signs that are mentioned in Scripture leading up to the return of Christ. We have spoken about “lawlessness”, “deception”, “false christs” and war.
This week, I am continuing the study of Matthew 24 by looking at verse 7b “And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.”
Jesus prophesies that 3 specific events related to nature will be on the increase in the last days. Earthquakes, which studies have shown are on the increase for significant quakes around the globe; famines, which are increasing due to natural causes, conflicts and this present pandemic; and pestilences or pandemics, which we are all too familiar with. These events will increase in terms of volume, numbers and severity as we approach the return of the Lord.
As Paul says in Romans ch.8, all of creation is groaning under the weight of the curse. 22 For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 And we believers also groan…, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering.
Jesus says that we need to be on the watch for these signs; the signs are an indicator or the beginning of sorrows or “labour pains” leading up to the return of Christ. What are these labour pains saying to us as they pertain to creation (the environment) and also to us as believers?
