In this series entitled “What Happens Next?”, I have examined a number of end time signs that are mentioned in Scripture leading up to the return of Christ. We have spoken about “lawlessness”, and about Jesus making all things new in our justice system; about spiritual decline and last week we focused on deception.
This week, I am continuing the study of Matthew 24 by looking at verse 5… “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. “
At first glance we are tempted to think of a delusional person calling himself the Messiah and gathering a little following. But Jesus is saying more than that; He says that there would be “Many” coming in His Name and that “Many” will be deceived.
Paul describes this deception in 2 Corinthians 11: 4 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
How is it that we could tolerate/put up with teaching that preached a “different’ Jesus; that is inspired by a “different” spirit; that advocates a “different” gospel? How can I guard myself from this attack?
