We are continuing this series entitled: “No Turning Back.” Jesus, on many occasions during His ministry invited people to become His followers….and whenever He gave an invitation to follow, He tells them that they must take up their cross and follow Him.
I’ve entitled this:” The Frog in the Kettle.” There was a Christian book by George Barna written 25 years ago where he talked about the dangers of the church being that frog that is being acclimatized by the world’s system. Instead of being salt and light, the church is progressively being enticed by the world.
Jesus in Luke 17, talks about the impending judgement that will come as a result of His return and the fact that many will not be ready … many will be so enamored by the things of the world and will miss His coming. Jesus uses the example of Lot’s wife in describing what it will be like in the last times.
Luke 17: 30 31“In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise, the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.
Lot's wife needed to take one last lingering look to see what we become of all of her friends; to take a look at her beautiful abode, to take a look at the city gates where Lot used to sit as judge. She turns around to look behind Lot, she looks back - she is faithless, unbelieving and she loves her world more than doing the plan and the will of God…as Jesus has said: “Anyone who sets their hand to the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God.”
Genesis 19:24 Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
Lots’ wife was lost, and Lot made it out by the skin of his teeth. God was gracious to him, even tho’ he had made a lot of bad choices. Even tho’ he afflicted and tortured himself spiritually by living way too close to the world.
1 John 2:15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. …17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
