We have been doing a series of messages about Job, the patriarch from the Old Testament. The title of the series is “Job: Patient Endurance and Faithfulness.” Last time, we talked about Job’s testing…God tests our hearts…. God is a Miner in search of a heart of gold.
Today, we are examining Job ch. 26, where Job tells his friends about what he knows to be true about the power and majesty of God. We live, today in a post- Christian society where not only do we have a very small knowledge about the word of God, and about God and Jesus – but also there is beginning to be an open hostility towards the Christian faith.
Why is that happening? I think there are many reasons for that, but one reason is that we have begun to serve a very small God. About 75 years ago or so, some of the mainline churches began to teach God in a different light. …God is not the Creator, He’s not able to do any miracles; and He's not able to save/ deliver…and God became a very small God. But Job is saying to his 3 friends, who had their view of God, “I've got a great, big, wonderful God- let me explain him to you!”
Job 26:7 He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.8 He binds up the water in His thick clouds, Yet the clouds are not broken under it.9 He covers the face of His throne, And spreads His cloud over it.10 He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness.11 The pillars of heaven tremble, And are astonished at His rebuke…14 Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, And how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?”
He Establishes (the heavens)
Job 26: 7 He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.
He Encompasses
Job 26:9 He covers the face of His throne, And spreads His cloud over it.
He Encircles
Job 26:10 He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness.
He Exudes (power) Job 26:12 He stirs up the sea with His power, And by His understanding He breaks up the storm.
He is Beyond). Exaggeration
Job 26:14 Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, And how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?”
Job says, we're just scratching the surface; we just hear a small whisper of Him…so it is in our world today - we just hear a slight whisper of God out in the marketplace and even that is enough to provoke people to anger and unbelief - why? Because we have believed in a small God.
