“Meekness and Majesty”

The Christmas story, though simply told, is filled with mystery. The meekness and humility of His birth; God sends the angel Gabriel to a small town in a small nation, to ask a poor young woman if she will become the mother of a child — a child who will be great — in fact, the Son of the Most High! An angel appears in a dream to Joseph, telling him not to be afraid to take Mary for his wife, because her child was conceived through the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit. Meanwhile, back in Rome, Emperor Augustus ordered a census for Roman-controlled territories. To comply with this, Joseph and his pregnant wife journey to Bethlehem, where they are turned away from the inn. Mary gives birth to Jesus in a stable and lays him in a manger.

But there is majesty that is revealed in its details as well…angels sing, glorifying God with messages of peace. Wise men follow a rising star that shows the way to the newborn king, before whom they kneel and pay homage. Majesty incarnate, mingled with meekness, that was Jesus. And the majesty of Christ will receive its fulfillment when Christ returns at the head of a heavenly army to defeat all evil forces and establish a majestic throne of glory in a resurrected earth.

Revelation 5:13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

Beholding the meekness and majesty of Jesus in His incarnation and life should set our hearts aflame with emotion, worship, devotion, and longing to be like Him. Just as He restrained His power, laid down His reputation, and embraced complete poverty, He invites us to be like Him in doing the same.

Join us in person on Christmas Eve, Saturday at 6:30 p.m. for carol singing, Christmas specials (solos and duet) and inspiring Christmas thoughts about Jesus, the essence of meekness and majesty.
