We are concluding the Easter series entitled: “Jesus- the Passover Lamb.” We have been talking about Jesus, our Passover Lamb and the original Passover feast held by the Hebrew children 1450 years before Christ. It happened at the exodus – their coming out of Egypt. They were told to take a lamb and apply the blood.
The blood would be a covering for their sin and whenever the Lord saw the blood then the death angel would pass over and they would not be harmed.
It's a picture of what Christ has done for us. We are made clean and righteous through His shed blood- it is His substitutionary atonement – a covering for our sins. In the Book of Leviticus God lays out the design and pattern for appropriate worship; the blood is absolutely vital. God gives great detail about how to sprinkle the blood in order to be sanctified and receive forgiveness. It is through the blood that we receive forgiveness of sins.
We are going back again to Exodus 12 where God gives instructions about the lamb at that first Passover, who is a type or symbol of Jesus and look at the similarities between that Passover lamb and Christ.
Exodus 12 :7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.
The life is in the blood, it wasn't anticipated that they would take the animal and nail it to the door but take the blood. The Lord tells them how to do that: take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood and strike the lintel and the door post. It reminds us of the cross - where Christ was struck and His blood flowed. The blood is a sign of obedience and faith that they had sacrificed the Lamb.
Exodus 12:13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
The Lord says when I see the blood, I will pass over you, the plague shall not destroy you. It’s imperative that we have the blood applied to our hearts, that we've acknowledged our sin and received His forgiveness through the sacrifice of Christ with grateful hearts.
