“When the Lord Passes Over”

We are starting a new series that will bring us to the Easter season entitled: “Jesus- the Passover Lamb.” What is the “Passover” anyway? The Passover is a Jewish feast that God told the people to celebrate every year to commemorate “the exodus.” It was the event where God brought them out of slavery and captivity to sin with a strong arm - He delivered them.

God raised up Moses and through nine great miracles the Lord proves that He was greater than the gods of Egypt. But they're still not released from captivity. So, the Lord says to Moses: “I’m going to inflict judgment on this land of Egypt. The Destroyer will come through in the night and it will take the firstborn of the land of Egypt, of every person and of every animal. But if you follow my instructions Moses, you and the people won't be harmed. And the instructions were to kill a lamb and smear its blood on the door posts and lintel of their homes.

Now let's get to this matter of the blood - because it is all important. The people are about to be redeemed - bought back from slavery through the blood of the lamb even as we are redeemed through the shed blood of Jesus.

Exodus 12:13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

“Now the blood shall be a sign for you” …. the blood is an indicator of something…. the Lord says the only appropriate symbol that you belong to Me and that you are under my covering - is the blood of the pure lamb that will be sacrificed by you so that you can live.

It is the only appropriate thing that releases you from the penalty of your sins and enables you to walk in freedom. It is the only thing that will redeem you from captivity. No amount of hard work and effort and trying to do the right thing is going to result in freedom for you from the slave driver in Egypt. The only appropriate sign is the blood.

And for us today the only thing that will grant us freedom from the devil's snare and the slave market of sin so that we can walk in freedom in Christ Jesus is the blood of Jesus Christ. What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
